Part one: the abandoned shopping cart email
As a webshop owner, are you also confronted with the large number of abandoned shopping carts? You are doing your best to increase the number of visitors to your webshop, to improve the customer experience on your website, and you see that visitors fill their basket and ... leave your website without checking out. Don't lose heart! In this blog, we give you tips on how to increase the turnover of your web shop with the so-called abandoned shopping cart email.
Record volume of online purchases
Statistics Netherlands reports that retail internet turnover in the second quarter of 2020 was a whopping 54.8% higher than the previous year. This is the highest growth ever recorded. In the first quarter, the turnover of Dutch webshops rose by more than 20%. Nevertheless, a number of entrepreneurs in the retail sector think that turnover will decrease in the third quarter. And with past results no guarantee when it comes to the future, it may not be a bad idea to look into the ways of generating more turnover with your webshop.
88% abandon their shopping cart
Can you imagine going to Albert Heijn, H&M or Hornbach, filling a shopping trolley, walking to the checkout, putting down your trolley and then walking out the door without paying?
No huh? However, online, this is quite normal, which makes it one of the biggest differences between online and physical shopping.
Online, 88% of filled shopping carts are abandoned. Eighty-eight percent! In other words, you, the webshop owner - after all your marketing effort and website optimisation - get 100 visitors to put a few items into their cart, and only 12 of them actually check out. The other 88 are lost.
Or are they?
The solution: a simple automated message
A simple software link (don't be put off by the word 'software'!) allows you to send customers who have abandoned their shopping carts an automated, but personalised, message. If, subsequently, they do complete their order, you can add extra turnover. Which is a nice bonus after all!
Increase turnover with a software link
Increasing the turnover of your webshop works as follows:
- You link the Abandoned Cart Recovery app to your Lightspeed webshop. For CCV Shop users, there is the Verlaten Winkelwagen (Abandoned Cart) app.
What exactly does the app do? It converts abandoned shopping carts into orders, and reminds visitors of their abandoned cart in an email. This nudge is sometimes just the last push someone needs to checkout anyway. The link in the email returns the visitor to their filled shopping cart and allows them to immediately complete their order.
Multiple studies show that launching an abandoned shopping cart campaign leads to 3-11% more turnover. On Abandoned Cart Recovery from Lightspeed and Verlaten Winkelwagen from CCV Shop, you can read more about the app's features, and how it will increase your website's turnover.
Tips for a successful campaign
- Don't wait more than a few hours before sending the abandoned shopping cart email.
- To really convince the customer, share a discount code in the email. Or take care of the shipping costs.
- Be positive and personal. For example, use the {{firstname}} tag in the email heading to address the customer directly.
